What Is Labor In Action?
Why Is It Urgent?

WHY ARE WE ORGANIZING?

We have deep concerns about the threats working and retired people are facing in our community and our country. We are outraged by the attacks on immigrants and people exercising their First Amendment rights. Corporations and our government are taking unprecedented actions to undermine our rights and quality of life. There are existential threats to the existence of our unions and the right to collective bargaining. Members of our community are disappearing; our schools aren’t properly funded; we can’t afford housing or other necessities. Social Security/Disability, Medicare, Medicaid, and many of our federally funded safety net programs for the poor, children, disabled, and other vulnerable people are being cut. As we see it, we have to be an active part of a movement that can make real change, or the situation will only get worse.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL IT TAKE?

That's up to you. We are asking that members pledge to attend three activities a year. You choose which activities—some last an hour or two and others more time. You attend those that interest you at times you are available. Most activities will be here in Sonoma County.

WHAT IS THE NORTH BAY LABOR COUNCIL (NBLC)?

The NBLC is the umbrella organization for North Bay unions that includes seventy local unions with 70,000 members. The NBLC has engaged in many campaigns over time. It helped to pass the living wage ordinances and Proposition 50; helps to organize workers into unions, supports picket lines and Local Unions involved in contract fights, helps pro-worker political candidates win, and helps to pass worker-friendly legislation and policy.

WHAT IS LABOR IN ACTION?

North Bay Locals, working under the North Bay Labor Council umbrella, are building a network of member activists to stand for economic and social justice, our democratic values, fundamental rights, and the common good.

IS MY LOCAL UNION INVOLVED?

Your Local Union supports the Labor In Action Program and is a part of its leadership.

WHAT WILL LABOR IN ACTION ACTIVISTS DO?

We will turn out to strike lines and rallies. Help good candidates get elected, and make sure we win the midterm congressional elections. Be trained legal observers when ICE shows up. Go to picket lines, protests, and direct action events. Attend conferences and workshops. Organize new workers and advocate for important policy and legislative issues. We will take a stand and show up.

WILL THERE BE TRAINING?

Yes! We will provide workshops on a range of issues and skills. We’ll also provide hands-on mentoring help if needed.

WHAT DO WE GET OUT OF IT?

A lot! The deep satisfaction that comes from working on something larger than yourself and knowing that when our democracy was threatened you stepped up. But also you’ll get skills training and mentorship if you want it, learn more about our unions, the labor movement, and our community. We’ll make sure you get recognition for your effort and that you have the opportunity to build relationships with like-minded people. We want it to be fun and to build a community.
